SUBMENTOPLASTY/NECK LIFT

Most people don’t like the heaviness, extra skin, or bands under the chin or entire neck area. The degree of improvement is usually better the more extensive the procedure. But, as facial cosmetic surgery has become more popular, patients’ desires for minimally invasive surgery and brief healing times have increased. While a neck lift remains the gold standard for improvement of the neck and jowls, less invasive procedures—such as liposuction, chin implants, or submentoplasty may often be used alone or in combination for rejuvination of the neck*.

Submentoplasty, in combination with liposuction and platysma plications, has proven to be an effective way to rejuvenate the neck without large-incisions. Recovery and downtime is shorter with Submentoplasty and is a viable option for patients who desire rejuvenation of the neck as a solo procedure or in combination with other facial procedures.

A Neck Lift tightens neck skin and is often used in conjunction with liposuction. In a neck lift, incisions are made under the chin in the neck and, along the hairline behind the ears. The loose skin is then pulled and tightened, and the incision is closed. The end result is a taunt, more defined neck*.

For those patients whose bands or cords that have begun to separate and sag, the neck lift may involve adjusting and or tightening the platysma muscle. By tightening the platysma muscle in conjunction with a neck lift and liposuction is an ideal way to improve excessive neck sagging*.

With both Submentoplasty and Neck Lift procedure, there will be bruising and some swelling, which will subside in about a week. During that time, there will also be some tenderness and discomfort.

Every surgery has risks. The common risks that are involved in Neck Lift are hematomas (collection of blood beneath the skin), seroma (collection of fluid under the skin), your neck has a feeling of tightness, numbness, asymmetry, and skin irregularities such as lumpiness, mottling or bruising.

Scars after neck lift surgery tend to be relatively short and concealed under your chin and behind the ears.  Dr. Haupt tries to hide the incisions within your own natural lines and creases.  Occasionally they can be long and visible.  This relates more to the neck lift technique, and can be camouflaged.  If you are prone to excessive scarring, ask Dr. Haupt what you can do to minimize your scars.
