BREAST RE-AUGMENTATION

BREAST RE-AUGMENTATION

Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery procedure in America, with over 300,000 procedures performed each year, according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Although breast augmentation surgery is generally safe and complications are infrequent, there are occasional situations where are augmentation surgery or a breast revision is necessary.

Dr. Haupt performs breast re augmentations or breast revision surgeries for many reasons. Some patients are unhappy with the results of previous surgery, some are experiencing complications, while others are interested in changing the size of their initial implants.

RESIZING

One of the most common reasons for a secondary augmentation or re augmentation is dissatisfaction with breast size. Most women find that over time, their aesthetic goals have evolved over time and wish to undergo augmentation to reflect these changes. Whether a patient wants to exchange for a larger or a smaller implant, a secondary breast augmentation can be performed. During this procedure, the current implants are removed and replaced with new implants to achieve the desired appearance.

CAPSULAR CONTRACTURE

Capsular contracture is abdominal scar tissue around the implant that results in the hardening of the breasts and adverse changes in their shape. The capsule will tighten down around the implant and generally make the breast feel tight and the position of the implant high. Capsulectomy, a surgical procedure that removes the tightened capsule, can correct this complication. In most cases, the old implant is removed and replaced with a new one.

IMPLANT RUPTURE

Breast implants are not considered lifetimes devices and can sometimes rupture. A saline implant rupture will be immediately obvious as the breast appears to deflate, and the body will safely absorb the saline solution. A silicone implant rupture is not always noticeable, and an MRI screening may be needed to determine if one has occurred. With a rupture of either implant type, the damaged implant is removed and replaced with a new one.

IMPLANT DISPLACEMENT

Although rare, breast implants can sometimes move out of their original position. This is usually a complication of a smooth shell implant. The following complications are associated with implant displacement:

Implants too high on the chest

Implants too close together (symmastia)

Implants below the breast tissue (bottoming out)

Implants under or in the armpit

Implants too far apart
